Stop Using AI to Write Your Social Media Posts (And What to Do Instead)

I understand that not everyone is a confident writer or has a creative flow with words.

And there’s nothing wrong with that. Not everyone is meant to write books, scripts, or articles.

But I’ve noticed people nowadays use ChatGPT to write even the most basic Tweets, emails and text replies…

  • 61% of people have used generative AI tools like ChatGPT (up from 40% the year before)
  • 21% use generative AI tools for creating media (images, posts, text)

Which has me wondering:

Have generative AI tools gone too far?

Are we now too lazy to think independently even the most basic replies?

Or is it the fear of being judged for misspelling words?

I personally, would rather read posts written by humans, even though they’re not perfectly formatted.

There’s something weird about reading AI-generated captions on Instagram or Twitter. And I’ve seen so much AI-generated content that they’re not only restricted to adverts, but also personal updates.

In a survey, only ~12% of people said they feel comfortable with reading fully AI-generated news. Which is a lot less than I would have guessed.

Somehow, you can just tell when a post is AI-generated.

It feels “soulless.” Unimaginative. And hard to relate to…

The result? People find these posts weird and avoid commenting on them.
And you lose the connection with your audience.

Then you realise: AI didn’t make your content better.

It made it sound like everyone else.

Forgettable.

So how do you write better posts (without using AI)?

Yes it’s possible. And no, you don’t need to be a professional writer.

Just turn off your distractions, and focus on a few simple things:

1. Write like you speak

Imagine explaining your idea to a friend. I like to pen down my thoughts on paper. Then I’ll look at my scribblings and try to organize them, read them aloud. Then I write again, a clean version. Then another one.

Until I’m 60-80% happy, you will never be 100% satisfied with your writings as a writer.

It’s just how it is.

2. Share your own opinions, not just information

After being a marketer on social media platforms for 7 years, I’ve noticed that people like to engage with familiar perspectives.

You don’t have to say something unique, but you need to state your thoughts and which side you’re on.

It doesn’t even matter which side you support, you will find your crowd of readers and supporters.

3. Tell small stories

Another hack I like to when writing social media posts or blogs, is to insert a quick backstory, (usually from my childhood or home memories).

This short story or fact makes the post memorable and relatable to people.

Nobody will have the exact same experience, but it’s always facinating to insert something personal about your life/experience as a writer. People love stories.

4. Don’t worry if it’s not perfect

I used to spend hours re-reading, and correcting posts. I would sometimes (ofter!) start over again as I was too focused on being perfect.

The reality is that a slightly messy post can often feel more authentic.

Especially with AI writing tools correcting every mistake, it’s almost refreshing to see a misspelled word and think, “Yay! That’s a human writer behind this post.

5. Use AI as your editing assistant, not the lead author

There’s nothing wrong getting help from AI here and there.

But if you really insist on using AI tools let it help you with getting ideas, brainstorming formats or polishing your writing. But always write the entire text on your own.

I’m telling you that the most valuable thing online right now is simple:

A real human voice in a sea of AI noise.
